Blood Song combines elements of the Game of Thrones and Star Wars universes, with a narrative style that hearkens back to Interview with a Vampire. The first half of the story was really engaging, as the main character goes through the battle school of the 6th Order. The remainder of the story was also interesting, though lacked the intimate depth of character interaction that made the first half so good. I am definitely going to check out the sequel novel, released earlier this year. I highly recommend the audiobook version, with narrator Steven Brand. Brand doesn't try to overemphasize character distinctions, but does a fantastic job with energy and tone. He has the perfect gruff gravel to narrate epic fantasy. It was a long novel, but my interest rarely flagged in the story.
