The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America - Tony Goldwyn, Erik Larson

A wonderfully written and well-researched history of the Columbian Expo in Chicago. It simultaneously details the construction of the fair along with the evil exploits of a serial killer. I learned a lot about historic Chicago, which is where I was born and resided as a boy. I'll take with me the vivid descriptions of the city's grotesque vitality, which we can scarcely imagine today.
