The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood It was good, though I can't say enjoyable. It reminded me in many ways of 1984. I guess I found the end a bit of a let down, not in that we don't find out what happens to our protagonist, but in the "look forward" chapter, which I feel diminishes the impact of the story, as well as its important themes. There's something to leaving us in a state of misery that places the issues right in the reader's lap. This is a good thing. But when a final chapter humorously relates the end of this unfortunate historical chapter, it lets all of us off the hook.

I also disliked the prose style. Too pretentious and lyrical for my taste.
